What are good rules of thumb to avoid over-optimization with this tool?

Here are effective rules of thumb to avoid over-optimizing (curve-fitting) the Dynamic Trend Flux MTF indicator. Since this is essentially a "Super-MACD," the risks lie in tweaking the periods and timeframes to perfectly match past price action.

            1. The "Stability Island" Rule (Robustness)

If your strategy works with the default parameters (12, 26, 9), but fails completely if you change them to 13, 27, 10 or 11, 25, 8, you are over-optimized.

            • The Rule: A good parameter set should be a "plateau," not a "peak." Small changes to the FastLength or SlowLength should not drastically change your win rate. If they do, your edge is likely random noise.

            2. Stick to Standard Timeframe Ratios

With the Multi-Timeframe (MTF) feature, it is tempting to find a "magic" combination (e.g., trading M1 with an M12 trend filter).

            • The Rule: Use standard institutional ratios for your trend filter, typically 4x to 6x your trading timeframe.

            • Trading M15 Filter with H1 (x4).

            • Trading H1 Filter with H4 (x4).

            • Trading H4 Filter with Daily (x6).

            • Why: Arbitrary timeframes (like using H3 for no reason) are often chosen just because they fit a specific past chart pattern.

            3. Don't Fix What Isn't Broken (Standard Defaults)

The default MACD setting (12, 26, 9) is used by millions of traders. This creates a self-fulfilling prophecy where signals are respected because everyone sees them.

            • The Rule: Only deviate from defaults if you have a specific thesis (e.g., "I am scalping crypto, so I need a faster reaction like 5, 13, 1"). Do not tweak numbers just to remove one losing trade from your history.

            4. Separate "Signal" from "Trigger"

This tool provides two types of information:

            1. Momentum (Histogram Color): Good for spotting strength/weakness.
            2. Direction (Cross Dots): Good for entry/exit triggers.
            • The Rule: Do not optimize the indicator to do both perfectly at the same time.
            • If you optimize for early Histogram color changes, you will get many false Cross signals.
            • If you optimize for reliable Crosses, the Histogram will lag significantly.
            • Pick one primary job for this indicator in your system.

            5. Visual "Repainting" Awareness

Since this is an MTF indicator, historical signals on the chart can look perfect but misleading.

            • The Rule: Remember that a higher timeframe bar (e.g., H1) does not "close" until the end of the hour. During that hour, the MTF indicator on your M5 chart might wiggle or change color. Never optimize based on how "clean" the historical chart looks; optimize based on how the signal behaves live (or use "Open Prices Only" for backtesting to be safe).
