Like all MA-based indicators, this one is lagging. The signal only confirms after price has already crossed the MA band. The ATR envelope adds an intentional extra buffer on top, which delays flips further to filter out false signals.

The lag is what makes it reliable as a trend filter. You're not guessing direction, you're confirming it. Use it to define bias and context, then time entries with a faster tool.

MA type and period are your main levers: DEMA/TEMA react quicker than SMA, lower period = less lag but more noise.
